Smart security lighting has become increasingly popular to enhance the home and improve security in recent years. There are so many choices in the form and style of modern-day lighting, including the more traditional outdoor lighting; however, it now comes with advanced technology to deter potential intruders and provide peace of mind to homeowners.

When choosing the best smart security lighting, several factors must be considered. Here I will explain some of the most important ones

A man installing smart home security lighting

Brightness and Coverage Area
The brightness and coverage area of smart security lighting are essential factors to consider. I ensure the lights are bright enough to illuminate the surrounding area to deter intruders. I look for lights with a brightness of at least 1000 lumens that can cover a wide area. Here is a video that explains lighting and lumens in more detail

Motion Detection
Motion detection is another feature I think is a critical part of smart security lighting. I like lights with motion sensors that detect movement and turn on automatically, alerting me to potential intruders. Many lights come with adjustable sensitivity settings, allowing you to customize the motion detection according to your needs.

Smart Features
Smart features such as remote control, voice commands, and smartphone integration can make your smart security lighting more convenient and user-friendly. For example, with remote control, you can turn the lights on and off from anywhere, while voice commands allow you to control the lights hands-free. In addition, smartphone integration allows you to receive alerts and notifications on your phone when the lights are triggered.

Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is an important factor I take into consideration when choosing any smart security lighting. Look for lights that use LED bulbs, which are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs. Some lights also come with built-in solar panels, which can help reduce your energy costs and environmental impact.

Here is a video I think explains lighting, lumens, and efficiency well.

Durability and Weather Resistance

It’s important to choose smart security lighting that is durable and weather-resistant. I always look for lights made from high-quality materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions and frequent use. It is important to check the IP rating of any outdoor lighting you intend to purchase; the IP rating (Ingress Protection Rating) determines how protected any device will be in a given environment. A lower IP rating may be suitable for lights located under eaves, whereas lights in direct contact with the elements will require a higher IP rating.

With these factors in mind, I have selected some highly rated smart security lighting options currently available for you to check out

FAQ's Smart-home-security-lighting I have researched

Smart security lighting is an advanced type of outdoor lighting equipped with motion sensors and smart technology. When motion is detected, the lights turn on automatically, illuminating the surrounding area and alerting homeowners to potential intruders. I love all of the smart features that come with modern-day security lighting, such as remote control, smartphone integration, and voice commands can also make the lights more convenient and user-friendly.

My smart security lighting improves safety by providing an added layer of protection to my property. Its advanced technology can detect and illuminate potential threats or hazards, providing an early warning and deterrent to potential intruders. Furthermore, its bright lights make my home less attractive to burglars. In addition, smartphone integration provides me with remote access to monitor and adjust the system from anywhere. Overall my smart security lighting devices give me peace of mind and security.

The benefits of using LED lights are mostly reliability, convenience, and energy efficiency. LED lights are far more energy-efficient than traditional bulbs; LED bulbs convert around 90% of the energy they use into light; conversely, approximately 90% of the energy used by incandescent bulbs is lost as heat, so you only get a 10% return in light for each unit of energy (Watt) which means you are literally burning the other 90% of your money; so they are complete opposites. I know which technology I prefer to use.

LED bulbs are far more reliable because they don’t have filaments like their older cousin, the incandescent bulb. Filaments can break easily if there is any type of external shock because the filament, which is usually made from expensive tungsten, is in a near molten state when lit. To make matters worse, the tungsten becomes increasingly brittle each time the bulb is cycled (heated and cooled).

Convenience simply comes down to ease of use, there are many, many LED lighting options out there, and one of the things I like most is the average DIY’r can install much of it themselves, avoiding the extra cost associated with professional installation. However, always consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure that your actions are correct.

Several types of smart security lighting are available, including floodlights, spotlights, and pathway lights. Floodlights are the brightest and cover the widest area, while spotlights are more focused and can be used to highlight specific areas. Pathway lights are smaller and typically illuminate walkways and other outdoor areas.

Most smart security lights can be integrated with other smart home devices, such as cameras, doorbells, and voice assistants. This can provide added convenience and functionality to your home security setup. Some smart security lights can also be connected to a security system, providing even more advanced security features.
